What the truck is a SUPERLOAD?

Good question. A SUPERLOAD is a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG truck, travelling at slow speeds to transport huge things. They can weigh as much as 583 giraffes (plus a few penguins), be as wide as 10 big, muscly Collingwood AFL players and stretch as long as a Ferris wheel.

That means they can be up to 700 tonnes, 5.8 metres wide and 120 metres long. Like we said - HUGE.

Over Size Over Mass (OSOM) vehicles can be even BIGGER than this - sometimes stretching as much as 18 metres wide.

Collingwood Football Club Partnership

We’ve partnered with the Collingwood Football Club to help spread this safety message, because knowing how to share the road with SUPERLOADS should be Black and White.

With major projects coming to life across the country, more huge vehicles will be hitting the road over the coming decade. These SUPERLOADS carry vital equipment- everything from transformers and wind turbines, to major mining and construction equipment - and we all have a role to play to ensure everyone stays safe.

In collaboration with the Collingwood Football Club, we’re educating drivers both in Victoria and across the country on how easy it is to be safe around SUPERLOADS.

Superloads and OSOM vehicles may cross multiple lanes including the wrong side of the road, travel at super slow speeds, and can block roads and traffic lights. So, when approaching a superload make sure to:

  • Slow down to 40km/h when passing vehicles with flashing lights lights (It’s the law to slow to 40km/h in VIC, TAS and NT and to 25km/h in SA! By law, you must also slow down in QLD, NSW and WA too)
  • Move as far as you can to the left.
  • Be patient and prepare to follow instructions from the pilot/escort team - which may include stopping, pulling over or overtaking when clear. Look out for hand signals, directions on vehicle message boards, or information over the radio.
  • Follow directions from National Heavy Vehicle Regulator or state police escort vehicles and pilot vehicles.
  • Only pass the superload when instructed to do so. This could be overtaking to the left OR the right of the load.

Remember

We’re here to keep you and everyone else on the road safe. By following directions and slowing down when you see magenta or yellow lights flashing, you're helping to keep us safe too.
